An Iraq War and Royal Navy veteran — and proud Northants & Hunts Freemason — Andrew Johnson from Peterborough has been identified as the train driver whose quick thinking and decisive action saved countless lives this week.

When news broke of the tragic mass stabbing on board a London-bound train, Andrew reacted instantly and with remarkable composure. Within minutes, he diverted the train to Huntingdon Station, enabling emergency services to respond swiftly and passengers to reach safety.
His actions have since been widely praised by both the public and the authorities, with many recognising his quick decision-making as instrumental in preventing further harm.
The Provincial Grand Master, RWBro Mark Constant, expressed his admiration and pride in Andrew’s bravery:
“Andrew’s calmness under pressure, his sense of duty, and his instinct to protect others are qualities that truly reflect the very best of Freemasonry. We are immensely proud of him and grateful for his service — both to his country and his community.”
Andrew’s response exemplifies the highest values of both the Armed Forces and Freemasonry — integrity, courage, and care for others. His conduct serves as a powerful reminder that the principles Freemasons strive to uphold extend well beyond the Lodge room and into daily life.
The Province of Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire proudly salutes Andrew Johnson — a true hero in our midst.
