On Thursday the 25th of April 2019, members of Dr Field Lodge No. 8158 attended a first-aid course organised by WBro Scott Austin and taught by Bro John Atkins, both of whom are members of the Lodge.
Bro John is a paramedic tutor with over 20-years' experience working with the ambulance service. He has taught first-aid around the country and currently works at Silverstone Circuit as Medical Services Manager. John keeps his skills up-to-date by working on the frontline with East Midlands Ambulance Service.
The aim of the course was to give the brethren an understanding of basic first aid tailored to incidents that might happen during a meeting, at a festive board, or at home. These included putting people into the recovery position, applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using a defibrillator, and clearing a person's airways to stop choking.
John proved to be an excellent tutor whose first-hand experience in dealing with medical emergencies helped the brethren to understand the simple steps that can save people’s lives. All-in-all it turned-out to be a very informative evening.
WBro Scott and Bro John plan to roll-out the course to the various centres of the Province with the aim of encouraging at least one person from every lodge to attend the course and learn basic first-aid, the benefits of which are clear.
More information will be sent to the Lodge Secretaries in due course.
It is hoped that brethren from across the Province will support this very worthy initiative.
