Passing of WBro Herbert (Bert) Stafford PProvSGW

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of WBro Herbert (Bert) Gordon Stafford PProvSGW at Orchid Lawns Nursing Home, Bedfordshire on Sunday the 7th April 2019. WBro Bert passed away peacefully following a short illness.

Bert was initiated into Cytringan Lodge No. 4048 in 1970 subsequently becoming Master in 1982 and Director of Ceremonies in 1990.

In addition, Bert was a member of Palmer Lodge of Provincial Grand Stewards No. 8995 becoming Master in 1997. He was also a member of Northants & Hunts Lodge of Installed Masters No. 3422 and an honorary member of Scout Lodge No. 9814.

In addition, Bert was very proud to be the Preceptor and President of the Kettering United Lodge of Instruction. For several years he was also Vice Chairman of the Kettering Masonic Hall Management Committee.

Bert was exalted into the St. Crispin Chapter of the Holy Royal Arch in 1977 subsequently becoming 1st Principal in 1991. He was also the founding First Principal of Cytringan Chapter and a member of Northants & Hunts Chapter of First Principals.

Having served as Third Provincial Grand Principal between 2000/2001, Bert rose to the rank of Past Assistant Grand Sojourner in 2012. He was also a past Most Wise Sovereign of Cytringan Chapter Rose Croix.

Outside of Freemasonry, Bert was a leader in the Scout Association for many years. He served as County Chairman and then County Commissioner. He was the holder of The Chief Scout's Silver Wolf, which is the highest award in the Scout movement, presented only for services of a most exceptional nature.

Bert lived in Geddington from the age of three until being admitted to Orchid Lawns Nursing Home four-years ago.

During his time in the village, Bert was involved in almost every local group and society.

He was particularly proud of having served as Chairman of the village-school's Board of Governors; also, as a Warden in his local church, which he adored.

A memorial service will be held at St Mary Magdalene Church in Geddington on Thursday the 2nd May 2019 at 1:30pm.

We salute Bert's outstanding service to Freemasonry, Scouting, and his local community. May he rest in peace.
